ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Hawaii should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 17-11, and the club is ranked 150th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 11 schools in the Big West (average ranking 205.1), they're currently ranked as our #4 team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Hawaii this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 162nd in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 101 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Hawaii does a pretty solid job of scoring points off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 5.9% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 76th nationally).
Hawaii plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 174th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 101 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Hawaii has been able to successfully prevent opponents from making shots between the three-point stripe and the low post. They're ranked 38th in Division I in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 34.0% of their attempts from that distance. Hawaii also does an adequate job to prevent opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.9% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 61st in the NCAA). If Hawaii does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 7.62 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 19th-worst in the college game.
Hawaii is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 34th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Hawaii often performs better than normal. Hawaii is more efficient than usual 56% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.61. In their other contests, Hawaii performs better than the norm 13% of the time.
Hawaii does better vs. clubs that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When playing squads that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 100.38, Hawaii performs above average 60% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 18% of the time.
Hawaii performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 38.25%, Hawaii is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 29% of the time.
