ANALYSIS: If you see Georgia on the schedule, you will likely get one of the average to below-average teams in college hoops. Their record this season is 6-26, and the club is ranked 205th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 14 schools in the SEC (average ranking 63.4), they're currently ranked as the worst team in the conference.
If there is a strength for Georgia this year, it's probably on the offensive end of the court. The team is rated 111th in offensive efficiency, scoring more than 103 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Georgia does a really good job to acquire opportunities from the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 27.72 vs. AO, they are ranked 36th in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. In addition, the team is in the top-100 in free throw shooting, converting a solid 74.4% of their attempts. Georgia also fares better than most teams when it comes to converting from locations close to the basket. The team is ranked 53rd in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 63.6% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The team will attempt a fair amount of field goals from up-close, too. Approximately 38.4% of their attempts vs. AO are taken from near-proximity locations, which puts the team in the top-75 in that category nationally. If Georgia does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 80.07 vs. AO, which ranks 40th-worst in college basketball.
Unfortunately, Georgia is not even remotely close to being as good on defense as they are on offense. The team is ranked 294th in defensive efficiency, allowing about 107 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Georgia fares terribly when attempting to stop opponents from converting from the inside. The team is ranked fifth from the bottom in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on 67.7% of their attempts from close-up. Georgia also gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 6.2% of all second-chance opportunities (310th nationally). If Georgia does have a bright spot on defense, it would have to be their success preventing opponents from getting to the free throw line. The team has a defensive free throw attempt rate of 20.10 vs. AO, which ranks 39th-best in the country.
Georgia is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 50th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that find ways to get to the free throw line, Georgia often performs better than normal. Georgia is more efficient than usual 68% of the time when facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 24.78. In their other contests, Georgia performs better than the norm 23% of the time.
Georgia does better vs. clubs that tend to get off more shots. When playing squads that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 86.02, Georgia performs above average 80% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 36% of the time.
