ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Georgia Tech is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. They have a record of 17-14 and are ranked 65th overall (out of 353) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 68.5), they're currently ranked as our #9 team in the conference. Sporting a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.740 (the 21st-highest in the country), Georgia Tech has prepared themselves by challenging some of the best teams in the college game.
Georgia Tech will mainly try to find success through their defense. They are ranked 26th in defensive efficiency and allow fewer than 91 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Georgia Tech will take a bite out of many opponents' shooting percentages, based on the fact that the team ranks in the top-50 in three of our four primary defensive field goal categories. They allow AO to convert only 29.0% of their three-pointers (fifth in the nation), 52.2% of their near-proximity attempts (20th), and 39.7% of their total shots from the field (30th). Georgia Tech is also one of the better teams when it comes to not allowing opponents to convert scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 3.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 39th in the NCAA).
Though they're not quite as efficient offensively as they are defensively, Georgia Tech still does OK when they have possession of the ball. The team ranks 155th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 100 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Georgia Tech is one of the best field goal shooting teams that opposing defenses will have the displeasure of facing this season. The squad is ranked 25th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 46.8% of their attempts vs. AO. Georgia Tech is also one of the better teams in the country when it comes to converting scoring chances off of offensive rebounds. Against AO, the team successfully converts 6.9% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 32nd nationally). If Georgia Tech does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 77.92 vs. AO, which ranks 26th-worst in college basketball.
Georgia Tech has been playing better basketball in their most recent outings, as evidenced by the team's #48 ranking in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Georgia Tech does worse vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 4.86%, Georgia Tech performs above average 17% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 72% of the time.
Georgia Tech performs worse against squads that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.21, Georgia Tech is more efficient than normal 21% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 75% of the time.
When playing teams that allow a greater number of field goal opportunities, Georgia Tech usually performs worse than average. Georgia Tech is more efficient than normal 18% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 82.31. In all other contests, Georgia Tech performs better than average 68% of the time.
