ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, USF likely fits the bill. Haslametrics has them ranked 286th overall (out of 351) in All-Play Percentage, and the team holds a record of 10-22. Of the 12 schools in the AAC (average ranking 128.8), they're currently ranked as our #11 team in the conference.
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to USF. The team is ranked 296th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 95 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. USF has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 13.16, which ranks 321st in D1. USF also won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 315th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 54.1% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO.
USF doesn't rate much better on defense than they do on offense. Allowing roughly 107 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #251 in the nation in defensive efficiency. USF has done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 314th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 40.8% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
USF has been playing much better basketball as of late and is presently ranked first in positive momentum because of it. USF has also been one of the most erratic teams in college basketball this year (currently ranked seventh from the bottom overall in consistency), which makes the outcomes of their future games far more difficult to predict.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow opponents to shoot well from the field, USF often performs better than normal. USF is more efficient than usual 65% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 42.60%. In their other contests, USF performs better than the norm 25% of the time.
USF does better vs. clubs that do not defend well on the perimeter. When playing squads that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 35.51%, USF performs above average 69% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 31% of the time.
USF performs worse against squads that convert well from outside the arc. When facing teams that have an offensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.85%, USF is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 62% of the time.
