ANALYSIS: While this site doesn't quite consider them to be in the national title hunt, Florida State has the potential to be a formidable opponent for many in Division I. They are ranked #33 (out of 351) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 23-12. Of the 15 schools in the ACC (average ranking 55.7), they're currently ranked as our #5 team in the conference.
Florida State has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #42 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Florida State does tremendous work shutting down the opposition from the inside. They are ranked fifth in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 49.1% of their attempts from close-up. Florida State also thrives on scoring fast and easy points off of steals. They're ranked 23rd in potential points off of breakaway steals vs. AO with a rating of 13.95.
Florida State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 43rd nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 111 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida State does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 32.10 vs. AO, they are ranked ninth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 68.7% of their attempts. Florida State will also routinely look to penetrate, pound the ball inside, and score from as short a distance as possible. The ball-club is 13th in the NCAA in ratio of near-proximity attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to get to the inside, they are undoubtedly capable of making you pay. Presently rated in the top-50 in near-proximity shooting percentage, they make roughly 64.0% of their attempts from short-distance vs. AO.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
