ANALYSIS: Florida State is a fairly decent basketball team that, while likely better than average, isn't quite good enough to crack any top-25 rankings this year. They have a record of 17-16 and are ranked 99th overall (out of 351) in the latest Haslametrics ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the #13 team (out of 15) in the ACC (average ranking 59.1).
The primary strength for Florida State is defense. The team is ranked 87th in efficiency, allowing fewer than 97 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida State does a fantastic job to prevent opposing teams from capitalizing on chances from offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 4.8% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 17th in the NCAA). Florida State has also done a really good job this year to prevent opponents from making shots from the inside. They are ranked 30th in the country in defensive near-proximity percentage, allowing AO to make good on only 52.9% of their attempts from close-up.
Florida State plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 124th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 102 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Florida State does a super job in their efforts to get to the free throw line. With a free throw attempt rate of 35.55 vs. AO, they are ranked eighth in the nation at getting to the charity stripe. Unfortunately, they don't convert a ton of their free throws and make just 66.3% of their attempts. Florida State is also one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 22nd in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 65.7% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. The team will attempt a fair amount of field goals from up-close, too. Approximately 38.8% of their attempts vs. AO are taken from near-proximity locations, which puts the team in the top-50 in that category nationally. The squad likewise lands in the top-25 in overall offensive field goal percentage and makes good on about 46.9% of their total attempts vs. AO. If Florida State does have a glaring weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties in getting off a sufficient number of shots each possession. The squad has a field goal attempt rate of just 75.95 vs. AO, which ranks eighth-worst in college basketball.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Florida State performs worse against squads that find ways to get to the free throw line. When facing teams that have an offensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 30.86, Florida State is more efficient than normal 27% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 73% of the time.
When playing teams that tend to get off more shots, Florida State usually performs better than average. Florida State is more efficient than normal 70% of the time when facing clubs that have an offensive field goal attempt rate vs. AO greater than 80.12. In all other contests, Florida State performs better than average 30% of the time.
Florida State is typically worse vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 14.00, Florida State performs above their norm 42% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 79% of the time.
