ANALYSIS: If you're looking for a squad in the bottom quartile of all Division I basketball teams this year, Delaware likely fits the bill. Their record this season is 13-20, and the club is ranked 293rd overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. They are also ranked by this site as the worst team (out of 10) in the Colonial (average ranking 173.3).
Offense is not the strong suit when it comes to Delaware. The team is ranked 312th in offensive efficiency and scores fewer than 93 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Delaware is a lousy shooting team, incapable of converting efficiently from anyplace on the floor and ranking in the bottom-50 in each of our four most noteworthy field goal shooting categories. They make just 30.2% of their three-pointers (ranking 336th nationally), 33.0% of their mid-range attempts (309th), 53.8% of their near-proximity chances (316th), and 40.6% of their total shots from the field (312th) vs. AO.
Though they rate better on defense than they do on offense, Delaware still isn't one of the more capable defensive teams in college hoops. Allowing roughly 105 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #228 in the nation in defensive efficiency. Delaware hasn't done terribly well defending the mid-range jumper. The squad is ranked 290th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 39.1% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Delaware often performs better than normal. Delaware is more efficient than usual 76% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 60.11%. In their other contests, Delaware performs better than the norm 30% of the time.
Delaware does better vs. clubs that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When playing squads that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 7.37%, Delaware performs above average 90% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 48% of the time.
Delaware performs better against squads that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When facing teams that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 37.49%, Delaware is more efficient than normal 85% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 44% of the time.
