ANALYSIS: Howard presently has one of the below-average teams in college basketball. Their record this season is 17-17, and the club is ranked 309th overall (out of 353) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 12 schools in the MEAC (average ranking 324.7), they're currently ranked as our #3 team in the conference. With a strength-of-schedule rating of 0.293 (which ranks ninth from the bottom nationally), Howard has had one of the cushiest slates in all of college basketball.
Defense is not exactly a strength for Howard this year. The team is ranked 320th in defensive efficiency and allows more than 111 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Howard gives up too many chances to easily score off of offensive rebounds. The team allows AO to convert 7.9% of all second-chance opportunities (328th nationally). Howard has also done a lackluster job this year when defending the mid-range shot. The squad is ranked 327th nationally in defensive mid-range field goal percentage, allowing AO to make good on 40.4% of their attempts from those in-between spots on the floor. Thankfully, AO will take nowhere near as many mid-range shots vs. Howard as they typically would, as only 20.8% of their field goal attempts will come from in-between locations.
Though they rate better on offense than they do on defense, Howard still isn't one of the more capable offensive teams in college hoops. Scoring roughly 98 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO, they are ranked #259 in the nation in offensive efficiency. Howard won't provide opponents much of a scare with their shooting percentage from the inside. The team is ranked 307th in near-proximity field goal percentage, making only 54.4% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO.
When playing on the road, Howard has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked tenth in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When facing teams that allow more chances at the line, Howard often performs better than normal. Howard is more efficient than usual 64% of the time when facing teams that have a defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO greater than 27.69. In their other contests, Howard performs better than the norm 11% of the time.
Howard does better vs. clubs that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint. When playing squads that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 61.91%, Howard performs above average 78% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 36% of the time.
Howard performs better against squads that allow a higher number of conversions off of the offensive glass. When facing teams that have a defensive second-chance conversion percentage vs. AO greater than 5.96%, Howard is more efficient than normal 59% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 22% of the time.
