ANALYSIS: Despite what their win percentage might indicate, Georgetown is a good team that can cause more than enough trouble for most opponents. Their record this season is 15-18, and the club is ranked 51st overall (out of 351) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the 10 schools in the Big East (average ranking 69.5), they're currently ranked as our #7 team in the conference.
Georgetown has a reasonably potent offensive attack. Occupying the #52 slot in our offensive efficiency rankings, they will score about 109 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Georgetown is deadly accurate at the free throw line. Making 76.8% of their attempts from the stripe, they are ranked eighth nationally in free throw percentage. Moreover, they get ample opportunity to beat you from the line, as the ball-club falls in the top-75 in free throw attempt rate with a rating of 31.05 vs. AO. Georgetown is also superb at converting jumpers in between the three-point stripe and the low post. The squad is ranked 16th nationally in mid-range field goal percentage, making about 41.1% of their attempts from those locations vs. AO. Georgetown is lastly one of the nation's most effective teams finishing close to the iron. The team is ranked 19th in the country in near-proximity field goal percentage, making approximately 66.0% of their attempts from up-close vs. AO. However, considering their success when shooting from the inside, this team is oddly much more likely to shoot from long-distance. Only 28.3% of the team's field goal attempts vs. AO are from up-close (the 13th-lowest percentage nationally). If Georgetown does have a weakness offensively, it would have to be the team's difficulties obtaining second-chance opportunities from offensive rebounds. The squad only has a rating of 11.90 vs. AO in potential points off of second chances, which ranks 47th-worst in college hoops.
Georgetown plays at roughly the same level defensively as they do offensively. The team ranks 77th nationally in defensive efficiency, allowing about 97 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Georgetown will do a number on many an opponent's shooting percentage, as the team ranks in the top-25 in three of our four major defensive field goal categories. They're most likely to shut you down inside the three-point arc, considering the team limits AO to converting just 29.8% of their mid-range jumpers (eighth in the nation), 53.0% of their near-proximity chances (24th), and 39.5% of their total shots from the field (23rd). Georgetown also does an adequate job to prevent opponents from scoring off of offensive rebounds. The squad allows AO to convert only 5.6% of all second-chance opportunities (ranked 62nd in the NCAA). If Georgetown does exhibit a noticeable weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's tendency to send opponents to the line too much by fouling. The squad has a rating of 35.70 in defensive free throw attempt rate vs. AO, which ranks eighth-worst in the country.
When playing on the road, Georgetown has played their best basketball this season. The team is currently ranked 22nd in the country in the away-from-home metric our site tracks.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Georgetown does worse vs. clubs that have trouble defending the mid-range shot. When playing squads that have a defensive mid-range field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 34.01%, Georgetown performs above average 20% of the time. Against all other opponents, the team performs better than the norm 78% of the time.
Georgetown performs better against squads that prefer the outside shot. When facing teams that have an offensive shooting proximity score vs. AO greater than 2.02, Georgetown is more efficient than normal 82% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 36% of the time.
When playing teams that favor a faster tempo, Georgetown usually performs worse than average. Georgetown is more efficient than normal 36% of the time when facing clubs that have a pace vs. AO greater than 68.94. In all other contests, Georgetown performs better than average 82% of the time.
