ANALYSIS: As an average to slightly above-average foe, Yale should probably not be discounted by opponents this year. Their record this season is 19-12, and the club is ranked 175th overall (out of 358) in Haslametrics' most recent ratings. Of the eight schools in the Ivy League (average ranking 208.5), they're currently ranked as our #2 team in the conference.
Yale will likely call on their defense to win a majority of their games. The team is ranked 128th in defensive efficiency and allows fewer than 99 points for every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Yale has done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 35th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.6% of their attempts from afar.
Yale doesn't perform as well offensively as they do defensively. The team is ranked 217th in offensive efficiency, scoring about 98 points every 100 possessions vs. AO. Yale has some difficulty protecting the ball efficiently when in possession, which leads to some quick and easy baskets for the opposition. The team's rating for potential breakaway points allowed off of steals vs. AO is 12.99, which ranks 311th in D1.
Yale is one of the more consistent teams in Division I (presently ranked 27th in consistency), so forecasting the outcomes of their future contests tends to be easier than the norm.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
Yale performs better against squads that aren't terribly skilled defensively. When facing teams that have a defensive efficiency rating vs. AO greater than 99.69, Yale is more efficient than normal 67% of the time. In their other contests, the team is more efficient 22% of the time.
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Yale usually performs better than average. Yale is more efficient than normal 67% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 57.11%. In all other contests, Yale performs better than average 22% of the time.
Yale is typically better vs. teams that do not defend well on the perimeter. Against foes that have a defensive three-point field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 33.23%, Yale performs above their norm 67% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 22% of the time.
Ivey scores 22 as Purdue beats Yale 78-56 in NCAA tourney (3/18/2022 9:17:59 PM) Jaden Ivey raced his way to 22 points and the Boilermakers shut down the Bulldogs for a 78-56 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
