ANALYSIS: Yale is a moderately good team, capable of testing many an opponent that they'll encounter. They are ranked #76 (out of 353) in the most recent Haslametrics ratings and have a record of 23-7. They are also ranked by this site as the best team (out of eight) in the Ivy League (average ranking 190.5).
Yale has a fairly effective defensive attack. Occupying the #80 slot in our defensive efficiency ratings, they will allow about 95 points for every 100 possessions vs. AO. Yale does a pretty solid job avoiding careless fouls and minimizing opponents' opportunities from the free throw line. With a defensive free throw attempt rate of 21.30 vs. AO, they are currently rated 36th in the country in that category. Yale has also done a very good job to prevent opponents from draining threes this year. They rank 37th in the NCAA in defensive three-point percentage, allowing AO to make just 30.7% of their attempts from afar. If Yale does exhibit a weakness on the defensive end of the floor, it'd likely be the team's unwillingness to take risks in order to score fast points off of the opposition's turnovers. The squad only has a rating of 8.39 in potential points scored off of steals vs. AO, which ranks 42nd-worst in the college game.
Yale plays at about the same level on offense as they do on defense. The team ranks 87th nationally in offensive efficiency, scoring about 103 points every 100 trips upcourt vs. AO. Yale will make a concerted effort to fire off quite a few three-pointers each game. The team ranks 35th in ratio of three-point attempts to total field goal attempts. If you do allow them to shoot from long, they have the ability to punish you for it, too. Ranked in the top-75 in three-point shooting percentage, they make approximately 35.8% of their three-point attempts vs. AO. Yale has also been fairly successful when shooting from the field. The squad is ranked 56th in the country in field goal percentage, making approximately 45.6% of their attempts vs. AO.
Yale has recently performed below their norm from an efficiency standpoint. The team is currently ranked 323rd in the country in positive momentum.
Projections are based on present-day ratings. Stars indicate games played at a neutral location. Game efficiencies only account for data before a contest has gone analytically final and are adjusted to extract home-court advantage.
CURIOUS TRENDS:
When playing teams that fail to defend efficiently inside the paint, Yale usually performs better than average. Yale is more efficient than normal 75% of the time when facing clubs that have a defensive near-proximity field goal percentage vs. AO greater than 59.12%. In all other contests, Yale performs better than average 25% of the time.
Yale is typically worse vs. teams that are likely to allow more second chances off of offensive rebounds. Against foes that have a defensive second-chance potential point rate vs. AO greater than 12.56, Yale performs above their norm 14% of the time. Against the remaining opposition, the team performs above average 64% of the time.
When facing teams that typically allow more than a fair share of breakaway opportunities, Yale often performs worse than normal. Yale is more efficient than usual 25% of the time when facing teams that have a potential point rate allowed off steals vs. AO greater than 10.86. In their other contests, Yale performs better than the norm 75% of the time.
